A Great Time to Buy Non-perishables – Look Past the Holidays
Thanksgiving is only a week away and a lot of us will be heading to the grocery stores this weekend to buy the food items for our big dinner. This season though, brings another great benefit. Many of the holiday grocery items go on sale for fantastic prices. While local prices vary, we have seen great prices on:
Chicken or Vegetable Stock
Baking Soda
Cream of Mushroom
Chocolate Chips
Flour
Sugar
Mini-marshmallows
Ice Cream
Frozen fruits and vegetables
Coffee
Soda
Wine
The nice thing about all of the above products is that they will keep from one to up to 6 months, depending on the product. So don’t just buy what you need for the holiday meals, take advantage of the low prices and stock up for the next few months. For example, chicken stock usually goes on sale at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter at all time yearly low prices. Buy enough to get you to the next holiday season.
If you have a little storage space, an airtight plastic container that you can store in the garage or under the stairs works great. If you don’t have a plastic tub, a box will do but loosely packaged products may not last as long. If you want, you can place these in a seal-able plastic bag.
Many people only think to store food in the kitchen and don’t buy because they think they are out of storage space in the pantry shelves. Non-perishable items can be stored in any cool, dry place. Just don’t forget where you buried them!
Late Breaking News Flash: AP reports that according to Nestle, due to rainy weather there may be a shortage of pumpkin pie filling this year. So buy early as you may not see cans on the shelf closer to Thanksgiving. You can find a link to the full article regarding this in the SmartShopIt.com Interesting News section.
