Successor to the Honeycrisp Makes Its Debut This Weekend
SweeTango - Hybrid of the Honeycrisp and Zestar
Living in the Silicon Valley, when I hear someone say they have the “next big thing” it usually means they believe they have a new technology that will revolutionize our lives. Well, this time it’s not Apple, as in the technology company, but apples as in the kind you eat.
Developed by the University of Michigan and grown by a Midwestern apple cooperative called “Next Big Thing”, the SweeTango apple is a hybrid of the very popular Honeycrisp and the lesser known Zestar variety. It is an early season apple which will be available in early September. For its introduction, it will start showing up in some Minnesota farmer’s markets this Labor Day weekend and then shipped a couple of days later to some limited markets in Seattle, Twin Cities and Rochester, NY. They plan to make it available nationwide in 2011 or 2012, according to an AP article.
The Honeycrisp apple was the last popular apple variety developed. At one time it was so desired that it brought a $1 per pound premium price to buy them. Recently it has lost its popularity as some feel the quality has suffered because it is now grown in climates that are too warm, the AP reports.
