Could You Eat On a Buck A Day?
As we stand in our local megamarts looking at the vast shelves of products it’s easy to forget that much of the world lives in hunger and poverty. The holidays and the recessionary times bring this to our minds more than in times of abundance. Could you eat on $1 a day for one month? A couple (Christopher and Kerri) started a social experiment to see if it could be done and fascination with it has caught on. They are calling it the “One Dollar Diet Program“.
Some of the interesting points I found in reading about their project and watching their interview on Fox:
- It was possible to do, yet very malnutritious.
- They were not able to buy fresh foods.
- The menu was very boring, eating the same things such as oatmeal, over and over.
- Comments from people in other countries such as Australia and Europe say there is no way they could accomplish this there. The price of food is much higher then ours.
- On recent trips to South Africa and Costa Rica, it showed me that many people live at this level of poverty (or worse) every day.
- This wasn’t started as a political statement but it touches at the very heart of some important discussions.
- I know I couldn’t live on Tang for a month.
Fascinating to read about and something to ponder the next time you’re at the checkout counter.
